Trade Unions in South West: Combating the Far-Right Menace

Trade unions in the South West are stepping up to address the rising threat posed by far-right groups in the region. Recent events have prompted a renewed focus on mobilizing members and coordinating efforts to counter the spread of hate and racism.

Matt Hollinshead, a regional organiser for the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union, shared his experience of attending anti-fascist protests in Bristol amidst the presence of far-right groups. The heightened tensions and aggression witnessed during these events have underscored the urgent need for a more coordinated response from unions and activists.

Following a series of confrontations, trade unions like Unite have taken decisive action to form anti-racist taskforces aimed at organizing demonstrations against the far-right across the South West. Brett Sparkes, a regional community coordinator, emphasized the importance of mobilizing members to stand up to hate groups on the streets, citing successful counter-demonstrations in various towns in the region.

Adekunle Akinola, vice-chair of the Unison Black members self-organised group in the South West, highlighted the need for trade unions to actively support migrant workers and address issues of racism within the workforce. Akinola emphasized the importance of creating safe spaces for Black members to discuss challenges and promote solidarity within the union.

While acknowledging a problematic history of racism within some unions, activists like Hollinshead stressed the vital role that unions play in challenging the far right and combating racist narratives. The power of solidarity and collective action among union members has been instrumental in standing up against hate and discrimination.

As trade unions in the South West continue to confront the far-right challenge, there is a renewed focus on engaging with migrant workers, promoting anti-racist initiatives, and fostering a culture of inclusivity and support within the labor movement. By uniting against hate and standing together in solidarity, trade unions are working to create a more equitable and just society for all.
