Award-winning photographer Sebastián Bruno recently collaborated with the Bristol charity, the Hive Avon, to work with people living with learning disabilities and autism. Sebastián initially visited the Hive as part of a photography project for Dreamline’s Picturing Bristol High Streets exhibition. However, he felt a strong connection to the Hive and its service users, prompting him to continue his visits and host workshops centered on art and roleplay.

Sebastián’s approach to working with individuals with learning disabilities is rooted in treating everyone as equals, allowing them to express themselves freely. This inclusive environment led to the creation of various artworks, including individuals portraying their dream jobs through roleplay. The workshops not only provided a creative outlet but also boosted morale among the participants.

One of the key aspects of Sebastián’s collaboration with the Hive is the emphasis on consent and safety. Each participant has the autonomy to choose their role during the workshops and decide if they want to be photographed. This approach ensures that everyone feels comfortable and respected throughout the process.

The collaborative art pieces created at the Hive reflect the grassroots spirit of the charity, embodying the unique personalities of the service users. Sebastián and the activity manager, Rhys Naill Mayes, have worked closely with the participants to capture their essence authentically in the artwork. The results have been both meaningful and enjoyable for everyone involved.

Looking ahead, Sebastián plans to exhibit the work created during his time at the Hive, showcasing the diverse talents and creativity of the service users. While the exact form of the exhibition is still evolving, there is a sense of excitement and anticipation among all the participants.

Overall, Sebastián’s collaboration with the Hive Avon highlights the power of art and creativity in fostering self-expression and empowerment among individuals with learning disabilities. By providing a supportive and inclusive environment, this partnership has not only produced unique artworks but also created lasting connections and memories for everyone involved.
