Sebastián Bruno: A Collaborative Journey with The Hive Avon
Sebastián Bruno, an award-winning photographer and documentary-maker, found himself drawn to the bustling hub of Bristol charity the Hive Avon during an assignment to capture the area for Dreamline’s Picturing Bristol High Streets exhibition at M Shed. His collaboration with this charity, catering to people living with learning disabilities and autism, has blossomed into a heartwarming journey of self-expression and creativity.
A Personal Connection
Sebastián’s initial visit to the Hive sparked a desire to do more, not just for the charity but for the service users he encountered. His workshops, inspired by cinema and photography, encourage art and roleplay, allowing individuals to express themselves freely. His easy rapport with the service users, filled with playfulness and encouragement, has created a safe space for self-discovery and creativity.
Reflecting on his own upbringing in Argentina, Sebastián recognizes the social divides in England, making it challenging for people to access support. His commitment to treating everyone equally, regardless of their background, has resonated with the service users at the Hive, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment.
Encouraging Self-Expression
Through Sebastián’s workshops, service users have had the opportunity to embody their dream jobs through roleplay and costume. This experience has been morale-boosting, breaking down barriers that may hinder individuals from pursuing their aspirations. The workshops have seen service users take on various roles, from prime ministers to surgeons, with creativity and enthusiasm.
Sebastián’s collaborative approach with the service users, guided by activity manager Rhys Naill Mayes, has led to remarkable artwork that reflects the essence of each individual. The process of augmenting portrait photos with different mediums has provided a platform for self-expression, with results that speak volumes about the grassroots spirit of the Hive.
The Journey Ahead
As Sebastián plans to exhibit the work created during his time at the Hive, there is a sense of anticipation and excitement among everyone involved. The workshops have not only fostered creativity but also built lasting connections and moments of joy for all participants. Each interaction with Sebastián has been described as “truly amazing” by Rhys, highlighting the transformative impact of collaboration and self-expression.
Sebastián’s journey with the Hive Avon is a testament to the power of art, empathy, and inclusivity in fostering a sense of community and belonging. Through his lens and guidance, service users have found a space to explore their identities, dreams, and talents, creating a legacy of creativity and empowerment that transcends boundaries and challenges stereotypes.
