A BRITISH hurt locker hero was killed in a tragic explosion on Ukraine’s frontline. Chris Garrett, 40, bravely lost his life while trying to clear minefields in Izyum, near Kharkiv. Chris, also known as Swampy to his friends, flew off to Ukraine immediately after Russia’s invasion. He dedicated himself to disposing of artillery shells and live ammunition left behind by Putin’s troops. Despite the dangers, Chris was determined to help secure Ukraine’s victory.
Chris, a former tree surgeon from the Isle of Man, founded Prevail and served as its chairman. He worked tirelessly in the aftermath of the Battle for Hostomel Airport, blowing up tons of artillery shells each day. Alongside 138 demining teams and over 500 men, including international volunteers, Chris’s efforts were crucial to Ukraine’s war effort.
Since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, 76 people have lost their lives due to mines in the region, with an additional 216 injured. Tragically, eight sappers have also been killed and 40 wounded while attempting to clear the mines.
