National Heritage Week is just around the corner, and the Organic Centre in Leitrim is gearing up to offer a series of exciting and educational events for all to enjoy. From August 17 to August 25, visitors can partake in a range of free activities that celebrate the rich heritage and culture of the region.
One of the highlights of the week is a hand spinning demonstration titled “From Fleece To Fabric,” which will be led by Eimear O Neill and Pearl Reddington. This event aims to showcase the traditional skill of producing clothing from locally sourced materials. Ms. Reddington, a talented designer from Dromahair, will also have hand-knits available for purchase on the day, adding a unique touch to the experience.
On August 20 and 21, Steffi Otto will be demonstrating the art of reusing tools and materials on the farm. Attendees can learn about upcycling broken slates for garden plant labels, offering a sustainable alternative to plastic use. This hands-on activity not only promotes eco-friendly practices but also encourages creativity and resourcefulness.
Renowned JP McManus award winner, Gerry Bohan, will be sharing a story from his book “The Clainings Tree” on August 21. This storytelling session promises to captivate audiences of all ages and provide a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the area. Additionally, on August 25, Ana-Maria Olaru will lead a nature-based journey to explore the ecology and history of the Glenaniff river system, offering a unique opportunity to connect with the natural world.
These events are supported by the Local Authority Waters Programme Grants Scheme, highlighting the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable practices in preserving our heritage. By participating in these activities, visitors not only gain valuable knowledge and insights but also contribute to the preservation and promotion of the region’s cultural legacy.
