The Bristol Cable is inviting all its members to attend the 10th Annual General Meeting on Monday, 28th October 2024, starting at 7:00 pm at The Station on Silver Street in Bristol. The event is an opportunity for members to engage in democratic media in action and participate in various discussions and decisions regarding the organization.
One of the key topics for this year’s AGM is the new campaign against Section 60, a special power that allows police to stop and search individuals without any suspicion. The Cable’s reporter, Sean Morrison, will be presenting the findings of the investigation into the police response to recent stabbing incidents in the city, highlighting the harmful and disproportionate impact of Section 60 on people of color, including children.
As part of the campaign, the Cable is urging the Avon and Somerset Police to commit to not using Section 60 again, review the consultation process with the community, and acknowledge the lack of direct consent for using the power. Members will have the opportunity to get involved in the campaign and participate in discussions about journalism, financial sustainability, and cooperative efforts.
Additionally, the AGM will involve the election of new directors to the board, allowing members to actively contribute to the organization’s governance and direction. The event will also provide a platform for members to meet the Cable’s staff team, network with other members, and enjoy some food and drinks.
