Join us at the 2024 AGM to Shape the Future of The Cable and Support the Campaign to End Section 60

Are you tired of local news filled with ads and mainstream media that feels out of touch? Do you want to challenge the influence of right-wing press? If so, then mark your calendars for the Bristol Cable’s 10th Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Event Details:

When: 7:00pm, Monday 28th October 2024 (Arrive from 6:45 for a 7pm start!)
Where: The Station, Silver Street, BS1 2AG

Unlike any other newspaper in the city, the Bristol Cable is owned by its readers, making it a prime example of democratic media in action. Members of the Cable are encouraged to attend the AGM to hear about the organization’s recent work, participate in decision-making processes, and engage in the organization’s operations.

This year’s AGM will feature reporter Sean Morrison discussing the Cable’s new campaign against Section 60, a controversial power that allows police to stop and search individuals without suspicion. The Cable’s investigation into the police response to a recent spate of stabbings in the city reveals the harmful and disproportionate impact of Section 60 on people of color, including children.

As part of the campaign, the Cable is advocating for Avon and Somerset Police to refrain from using Section 60 in the future, review the consultation process with the community, and acknowledge the lack of direct consent for utilizing this power.

After Sean’s presentation on this critical issue, attendees will have the opportunity to join the campaign and engage in discussions about journalism, financial sustainability, and cooperative efforts. The AGM will also involve the election of new directors to the board, promoting democratic decision-making within the organization.

Why Attend?

The AGM is a unique chance to meet the Cable’s staff and fellow members, indulge in food and drinks, and potentially have some fun. The event will take place at The Station on Silver Street, home to the Cable’s office, offering attendees the opportunity to shape the organization’s future directly.

If you are not yet a member of the Bristol Cable, you can sign up to become one and participate in the AGM.
